Meet Nick our Technical Production Manager here at CEG. Nick started working with CEG as a fresh-faced JMC graduate 9 years ago and since then, has developed into a key member of our technical team, one who is highly skilled in all elements of technical design and execution.
Often fondly referred to as “the octopus” because of his ability to be across so many individual AV elements and buttons at once, Nick is as technically skilled as he is punny.
There is no typical day for an AV technician - it’s one of the much mentioned benefits - but you’ll often find Nick overseeing the technical aspects of an event, acting as Lead Technician or Stream Director when required and working closely with the team to ensure everything runs smoothly on event day. Nick is known for executing flawless events, being able to troubleshoot in the most intense environments and staying calm under pressure. Nick was even the inaugural winner of the staff nominated CEG SuperStar Award.
We sat down with Nick and asked him a few questions about his event industry journey and here's what he had to say:
How did you get into events?
During high school, I was a self-professed geek and a musician. Wanting to work in a field that combined both of these interests, I pursued a degree in Creative Technology at JMC, with a focus on audio engineering and sound production. After graduating and touring with bands for some time, I joined the CEG team as a junior technician.
Favourite event you've been a part of?
The Keune events stand out as particularly memorable! We’ve partnered with Keune over the past 10 years to produce a number of their events, but this one in particular was a large-scale grand conference at the Star Sydney, followed by an afterparty at The Argyle. The production aesthetics of these two events were quite distinct: the conference was slick with a catwalk stage and large-scale curved projection walls, whereas the afterparty involved a bit more technical creativity with moving lights, happy tubes, and a full-scale band production.
Favourite moment working at CEG?
As cliché as it sounds, it’s the small moments that hold the most significance for me. What keeps me motivated during challenging events is the support of the outstanding team at CEG. My fondest memories involve bonding with my colleagues; whether it's enjoying a barbecue in the warehouse, participating in team-building activities, or training staff on the latest technologies.
Any advice for someone wanting to join the industry?
To gain experience in as many areas of AV production as possible, be willing to learn and adapt - technology is always changing - and build strong relationships with industry professionals.
