Which LED Screen is Right for Your Event? A Quick Guide to Making the Right Choice

LED screens have become a staple in modern event design - from eye-catching stage backdrops and digital signage to immersive activations and live content display. But not all LED is created equal, and choosing the right product can significantly impact both the audience experience and your event’s visual quality.

At Connected Event Group, we help clients navigate the technical options and select the best-fit LED solution based on their event type, venue, content and budget. Here’s what you need to know when deciding which LED is right for your event.

Understanding Pixel Pitch

Pixel pitch is one of the most important factors when selecting an LED screen - but what does it actually mean?

Pixel pitch refers to the distance (in millimetres) between the centre of one LED pixel and the centre of the next. A smaller pixel pitch means a higher resolution, because the pixels are packed more closely together. This results in a sharper image, especially when viewed up close.

What pixel pitch do I need?

  • 1.5mm to 2.5mm pixel pitch
Ideal for indoor events where audiences are close to the screen, such as corporate presentations, panel discussions, awards nights or studio recordings. These high-resolution screens are perfect for detailed content like text, slides, video playback, and live camera feeds.

  • 2.9mm to 3.9mm pixel pitch
A versatile option for mid-sized indoor and outdoor events where the audience is several metres away. Common for exhibitions, music performances, brand activations, or general-purpose stage backdrops.

  • 4.8mm+ pixel pitch
Best suited for large-scale outdoor events or environments where the viewing distance is significant - for example, sporting events, festivals, or public screens.

Choosing the wrong pixel pitch can lead to grainy visuals, unreadable text or wasted spend - which is why we always match the product to the environment and audience distance.

Why Refresh Rate Matters

Refresh rate refers to how many times per second the image on the screen is updated, measured in hertz (Hz). For live events - especially those being recorded or live-streamed - high refresh rates (typically 3,840Hz or higher) are essential.

A high refresh rate ensures smooth, flicker-free content on camera and to the naked eye. Lower refresh rates can cause flickering in recordings or motion blur during fast transitions, which can negatively affect both the in-person experience and any post-event video content.

At Connected Event Group, all our LED walls are high refresh rate, broadcast-ready, and colour-calibrated to ensure professional results across all content types.

Choosing the Right LED for Your Format

Here’s a quick breakdown of common event formats and LED considerations:

  • Conferences & Corporate Events:
Go for high-resolution indoor LED (1.5mm–2.5mm) for clear text and video, especially in venues with ambient lighting. Consider LED lecterns or digital signage for wayfinding and branding.

  • Awards Nights & Galas:
Use larger LED backdrops (2.5mm–2.9mm) for dynamic content and sponsor recognition. Incorporate custom content design and motion graphics to add flair.

  • Expos & Activations:
Use flexible LED shapes, column wraps, or archways (2.9mm–3.9mm) for attention-grabbing displays that can run branded loops, live social feeds, or interactive content.

  • Outdoor Events:
Select robust, weatherproof LED with higher pixel pitch (4.8mm+) and strong brightness to stay visible in direct sunlight.

  • Studio & Filming Environments:
Choose ultra-fine pixel pitch LED with high refresh rates and colour accuracy for crisp, flicker-free footage. Perfect for virtual events, broadcasts, and livestreams.
